Car Sharing
Environmentalists have long been advocating car sharing as a useful way in which ordinary people can help in the fight against global warming. Take a look at how this works in practice by clicking on the video link below. Or would you prefer to take the bus?

The Piano
A very senior couple, Fran and Marlo Cowan, walked into the lobby of the Mayo Clinic and spotted a piano. They proceeded to give an impromptu recital. They've been married for 62 years, and he turned 90 in February. It really is all about having the right attitude. Enjoy!

Ideas To Combat Global Waming
Up to 20 million people in low-lying areas of Bangladesh are at risk from rising sea-levels, according to new research. So the country needs inventive solutions to help minimise the impact of flooding in the future.
Britain's Department for International Development is sponsoring farmers to cultivate crabs, ducks not chickens, and gardens that float.
The BBC's David Shukman has been to see how some of the solutions may help those who are in areas vulnerable to flooding.

I Had An Inkling This Was The Case
Have you noticed how quickly your ink cartridges seem to run out, especially when you print off colour photographs? Ink cartridges take up a large share of your consumable computer costs.
Zoe Kleinman finds out why printer cartridges are being replaced before they completely run out of ink. Watch her report by clicking on the following video link:

Expensive Fakes!
My attention was drawn to a rather disturbing report concerning faked designer goods. Some of the figures being banded around are quite alarming. For example, in 2008 customs officials seized a staggering 178 million faked items - mostly imported from China. Even more incredible, in France the maximum fine for being caught with faked goods is 300,000 euros (£260,000) or three years in jail. Add to this the fact that the UK government says legitimate businesses lose an estimated £10 billion a year to counterfeiters with £9 billion ending up in the hands of gangs. The Italian authorities, though less harsh than the French are threatening severe action against against those caught buying such merchandise. Fortunately, the UK government has decided against criminalising consumers. Instead it aims to target markets and car boot sales in an attempt to stop the counterfeits being sold.
Intellectual property lawyer Simon Tracey said anyone tempted to bring back items such as fake designer sunglasses, a football top or handbag from their holidays should beware. But he said it was hard to persuade people that owning a fake was "a bad thing."
Apart from the huge loss in revenue as a result of these illegal activities, there is also a safety issue involved. Fake alcohol can be particularly dangerous, causing blindness or death. Copied toiletries can be harmful and counterfeit toys and medicines will not have passed safety tests.
Whilst these facts are alarming, it does seems to me, that many innocently unaware people would be prosecuted simply for buying something they like not necessarily because they want to parade around in designer gear. I also think the UK governments claims that businesses lose an estimated £10 billion a year is ridiculously exaggerated. This figure can only be arrived at by assuming that all those people who purchased counterfeit goods would otherwise have bought the genuine articles. They simply would not be able to afford the 'real thing' because the price would be extortionate. That is precisely why they buy the counterfeit goods in the first place, thus creating the whole problem.

Pilot Recreates Historic Channel Flight
A French pilot has recreated the first flight across the English Channel in a monoplane like the one flown by Louis Bleriot in 1909, complete with a wooden propeller and bicycle wheels.
Click on the video link below to watch amazing pictures from his flight.
Edmond Salis took off from Bleriot Beach near Calais, on France's northern coast and arrived 40 minutes later in Dover, England.
The original historic crossing on 25 July 1909 took Bleriot 36 minutes.
(Note: There is no soundtrack on this film.)

Little Hero And A Happy Ending
It may seem like it sometimes, but all news is not bad news, so it is nice to be able to report on a story with a happy ending.
A two-year-old girl has saved her mother's life by making an emergency phone call when Joanne Keeling collapsed.
Isabelle had watched an episode of the childrens programme 'Tweenies' the day before, where the characters had learnt how to make an emergency call.
