Looking Back - Tiger Woods Wins US Masters
On this day in 1997, Eldrick 'Tiger' Woods became the youngest ever player to win the US Masters at the age of 21. His winning margin of 12 strokes was three more than than the previous record held by Jack Nicklaus. His tournament score of 270 strokes, 18 under par, was also a new tournament record. He became the first black player to win a major championship. Woods a child prodigy won his first competition at the age of three and went on to win an unprecedented three consecutive US Amateur championships from 1994 to 1996 During the 1997 PGA season Woods won a staggering $2 million, winning four tournaments and finishing in the top 10 nine times. In June 2000 he won the US Open by 15 strokes and a year later completed his Grand Slam, winning the Open championship at St Andrews, Scotland. His winnings for the 2000 season earned him nearly $10 million in prize money. Having lost his world number one place to Vijay Singh in 2004, he regained it a year later in April 2005 after winning his fourth US Masters, his ninth major title.*************
